Yarn Felting Wool

Would it be smart to knit with wool for a purse that will be used frequently?
I found a cabled purse pattern that I really liked and it's something I'll use everyday. I picked out some Pattons cream-colored Merino wool yarn. I wasn't sure if the wool will eventually become felted from frequent use or not. I'm going to be putting a lot of time into the bag and I don't want it to become felted! Should I even use the yarn? or what should I use? I like the feel of the wool and I want the cables to really stand out and the purse to be soft too.
If the wool gets dirty and you accidently wash it in hot water it will shrink. Go to a hobby store and find a yarn or string type of material that is covered in plastic or something soft so it can be washed.
