Wool Blend Yarn

Is there a sure-fire way to getting the loose end out of a skein of yarn?
On the cheap acrylic yarns, I can usually find the loose end inside the skein. (pull the single thread out of the left of the skein, and then fish for the loose beginning end out of the right hand side) but when I buy bulkier yard, and wool blend yarn - I can never find it on the first time, I end up pulling loops out of the middle and making a big mess.
What am I doing wrong??? Help! 
if you're having that much trouble, just look for the free end on the outside and use that.
