Everyone knows that a very simple but not boring crochet pattern for a baby blanket?

I know the basics of the hooks. I can take a chain and I can work out of that. It just seems that it always appears dull. I have a beginner's book on hooks to help me along, but I would also like to hear from other people. The yarn would use multi-colored, so I know it is a color pattern The more I work in it. Suggestions?
