Baby Ferret Violently Obsessed with Food?
I recently got a male kit to accompany my 1 year old female ferret. He doesn't bite much, a few playful nips, until you happen to be eating something, then he WILL NOT leave you alone until he gets a piece. He will latch on very hard with his sharp teeth and even scruffing him just leads to violent thrashing and when i put him back down he attempts to attack wherever the food source came from (usually getting me in the process) Will also hiss and is very possessive of whatever he eats. Does anyone have advice on how i deal with this now so when he's older i don't have to go get stitches?
Scruffing and cage time have always been the best consequences. It shows you're the boss.
The ferret has food at all times right? Ferrets don't overeat, they self-regulate, so they should always have their own food available.
He may just be curious about what you're eating. In which case, seeing him come near, sniff, and want to get closer should all be fine. Any biting or scratching, though, promptly gets scruffing, a firm 'no', and cage time until you're done eating.
If you're consistent with that, you should see a change in behavior after a while.
Oh, also. Scruffing should limit his movement so that he kinda goes a little limp, when done right. He shouldn't be able to thrash around. It's that loose skin at the back of the neck, and don't be afraid to squeeze it a bit. It may take a little bit to perfect but soon it comes naturally.
