What is a good substitute for Moonlight Mohair?
I love this sweater made with "Moonlight Mohair" by Lion Brand Co. but it is way too pricey. What would be a reasonable substitute?
The sweater pattern is in a magazine and I don't own a scanner. I figured that any Bulky (5) yarn should work I was just wondering what would be similar to the Mohair look of the "Moonlight Mohair" yarn.
Great link, good prices but they won't deliver to Canada =(
You didn't supply a link to the sweater pattern, so it's difficult to suggest a substitute that will work well with that particular pattern.
In general, Moonlight Mohair is a category 5 or bulky yarn. Any yarn that's a category 5 yarn should knit to the same gauge. However, Moonlight Mohair is going to be difficult to duplicate as far as characteristics. For one thing, it's a stranded yarn that has a heavy strand of mohair and a light strand of a sparkly material. It is also a WARM yarn. I like it for winter jackets--it has a unique look and it keeps the wearer warm. It also knits up quickly.
If it's the "suggested retail price" that's the problem, you might check with your craft store to see if it's going to be a sale feature any time soon or if you can buy it in one of the stores that routinely has discount coupons available. Or if you're happy with the limited color offerings, you could try this online seller: http://www.pagelinx.com/cgi-shopper/loadpage.cgi/smileysyarns/ezshopper?user_id=id&file=iriot.htm . The downside of buying from that online retailer is that their minimum order is $50 plus the $12.95 shipping charge. Most people I know combine orders to make up the $50 minimum.
Added: MAJOR downside about shipping to the continental US only. Having a shipment sent to someone who could resend it to Canada would get the price back up to the "oh, my!" level, I assume.
If all you want is the mohair or the look of mohair, Lion Brand's "Jiffy" will give you that for a lot less money. Patons "Divine," being mostly acrylic, is much softer, but you might like the look.
The only yarns I've run across that are close to "Moonlight Mohair" in texture and effect are Karabella's "Piuma Gold" ($21.95/50 g) and Prism's "Stuff" (Wild Stuff, Cool Stuff, Neat Stuff--$92/300 yd). Berroco's "Memoirs" might work ($10/50 g). Apparently, Lion Brand was trying to compete with those "designer" yarns at the "low-price" end when they developed "Moonlight Mohair."
Honestly, if what you like is the sweater design, there are less expensive yarns that will knit up to the gauge. In my case, I fell in love with the yarn and then looked for patterns to use it to best effect rather than the other way around. You might want to buy a couple of skeins and knit a collar or scarf to see if you think the effect you get is worth the investment before you invest in an entire sweater.
