First Knit Sock-How do you join on DPNs?

Hi Guys,

I'm teaching myself to knit socks...I know how to knit the basics, but all sock patterns say that after you move your cast-on stitches to the other needles the first thing to do is join. I understand that that means to join the stitches so you are knitting a circle, but I don't understand how to do the join.

I've read lots of descriptions, but none really make sense to me. For example...say I cast on 24 stitches and spread them over three needles so there are 8 on each needle. Now, I am ready to join...all the instructions say join the first stitch cast on..do you use the empty needle to do a knit stitch but move it to the needle that already has cast on stitches on it? In other words, do I leave the empty needle in my right hand empty and somehow transfer the knit stitches to one of the 3 needles that are already occupied?

I searched the web for a video of joining, but couldn't find one...not a good one anyway...

When you get to the last stitch on the needle pick up the empty needle and knit across the next needle and just keep on doin it that way .
