Knitting Patterns Hats Berets

Fellow Knitters!! i was wondering...?
if you know of a good pattern for one of those cute, slouchy knit hats? i know they're mostly considered berets, but i hate the pokey outy edge of a beret...plus it looks like it would be hard to knit at my skill level. anyone know of a good FREE pattern that's a slouchy non-beret hat (or at least doesn't look so much like a beret when you wear it)?
or...do you think i could knit a big, loose beanie with a tighter brim to achieve the whole tight on the head-baggy everywhere else look? what kind of yarn would you recommend for such an endeavor? i was thinking really soft cotton or wool...but it would have to be something that's not too stiff, right?
thanks in advance... much looooooove.
I would suggest a cotton or wool blend. Found a couple of patterns for this endeavor:
Turva Hat: http://home.online.no/~tu-mell/slochedtuvahat.cfm
Big Blue Beret: http://kellymaher.wordpress.com/2007/03/14/big-blue-beret-pattern/
Barrymore Slouch Hat: http://www.knittingdaily.com/blogs/patterns/archive/2008/04/18/barrymore-slouch-hat.aspx
You might have to join the website for the last one, but it is worth it as they have great free patterns.
My personal rule of thumb is to not put anything made with natural fibers in the washing machine that I make unless the yarn says "Superwash". Even then, you can wash it on gentle, but don't put it in the dryer. If it has multiple colors, it's best to wash it by itself as it can tend to bleed a little.
Superwash means that the yarn has been treated so that it will not felt when heat or agitation is applied to it (washing machine, basically). Wool, mohair, and cashmere are a few natural fibers that like to felt in a washing machine. Felting means they will shrink and leave a harder, fuzzy feeling item. Animal fibers felt. Cotton doesn't felt, but it does stretch a lot and doesn't like to return to it's previous shape unless it's a cotton blend yarn i.e. cotton/wool/nylon or cotton/linen/nylon. I like cotton blends with nylon as that means it will spring back to shape when worn or washed.
If you're handwashing a handknit item, put a little white vinegar along with a gentle detergent to wash it. Don't forget to let it soak! After washing and rinsing it, place on a flat surface that won't soak in. You could just put down a black trash bag on a bed and put the item on that. It won't soak through the trash bag. That's also how I block things...but that's a different question.
