Need help! knitting emergency?
I knit a kippah for a friends birthday and once i finished on the needles the edges were rolling up. the pattern said to wet it, pin it to something round, and let it dry. i did that overnight, and even used a blow dryer to make sure it was dry, but when i took the pins out it still wasnt flat. its not as rolled up but i have to mail it today if i want him to get it before his birthday. does anyone have any ideas?
1. If you finished knitting at the bottom edge, you can unravel three to five rows and knit the last three two five rows in a rib--2 x 2 rib or 3 x 3 rib would probably work better, or you can use 1 x 1 rib if it looks better. Having both knit and purl stitches in the same row or in adjacent rows prevents curling.
2. Or rework the last few rows in seed stitch, garter stitch, moss stitch, or other pattern containing both knit and purl stitches.
3. Work around in single crochet, then work backwards single crochet (crab stitch) and fasten to the starting point. That will make an edge that will help somewhat to control the curl and won't look lacy.
4. Depending on the fiber you're using, you may be able to eliminate the curl by "killing" the fabric with steam. It works on acrylic, does not work on wool. Also, doing it's an iffy proposition--it may destroy the look of the item, so I recommend killing the fabric only if you're willing to take the chance that the item might not look nearly as good after.
Remember, when you knit an item in stockinette stitch, you need to create a border around the edges that has both knit and purl stitches to prevent curl. Usually 3 to 5 stitches at the beginning and end of each row will work for side edges that aren't going to be seamed. And 3 to 5 rows of seed stitch, moss stitch, double moss stitch, or other pattern that contains both knit and purl stitches will work. If you prefer garter stitch, you'll need about 5 rows.
