Calling All Knitting Experts! Help I'm confused?
Okay so I've been knitting for about 5 years now. I've only made scarves and basic handbags and ipod cases by sewing pieces together with a yarn needle. lol i think i may have broken some knitting rules while doing this but oh well lol. I really want to start doing more advanced things like leg warmers, hats, and gloves. But I don't know how too at all. I know they make knitting patterns but I don't know how to read them.
All I have right now is yarn, straight needles, and knowledge of the garter stitch. I don't know any others. And I only know how to sew straight down. What else do I need or need to learn?
**Oh and I was just looking online and saw knitting "looms" i don't understand what you would use them for? I know you use them instead of straight needles but are they easier? Faster?
Please inform me! lol
If you want to improve your knitting and learn new techniques, the two best on-line sites (in my opinion, anyway) are these:
KnittingHelp.com: http://www.knittinghelp.com - including videos
LionBrand.com: http://learntoknit.lionbrand.com/ - text and illustrations
Ways to learn more about knitting and have fun too:
1. Check your local yarn shop (LYS) for lessons.
2. Check with your local community college's lifelong learning or continuing education division for classes.
3. Join a knitting group. Some meet at yarn shops, some meet at people's houses, some meet at yarn shops--there are groups in almost every town. Your church may sponsor a knitting ministry, and joining would provide you with opportunities to knit for others as well as to learn new techniques.
4. Watch one or more of the TV shows aimed at knitters. Knitty Gritty is archived here: http://www.diynetwork.com/search/results.do?diySearchString=knitty+gritty+episodes&diySearchType=diynetwork.com . Knitting Daily is archived here: http://www.knittingdaily.com/blogs/kdtv_series_200/home.aspx .
