I need help with how to make stripes with loom knitting!!?

I have a knifty knitter and I want to make a hat with stripes!
I have looked EVERYWHERE (And I mean EVERYWHERE).
Can anybody help me by either explaining it, giving link to instructions or videos?

Do you want to make stripes horizontally or vertically? If horizontally (across the width) then you just change the color of your yarn for the stripe. Leave the first color hanging. Then when you want to change back, pick up the first color and work with it. Leave the second color hanging.

To make stripes vertically, you would have to attach the new color to the stitch or stitches and then drop it after you want to resume the first color. Keep doing that across the row.
