You can learn to knit on your own, online.
there are a lot of websites that are very useful i.e.
>> http://www.knittinghelp.com << my personal favorite
http://www.dailyknitter.com
http://www.lionbrand.com
http://www.knitty.com
there is also a dvd that is great for beginners by nici mcnally. it's called. the complete beginner's guide to knitting, you can find that on amazon.com. it even has a first aid segment which helps you correct your knitting mistakes.
and for free patterns check out http://knittingpatterncentral.com/directory.php
for abbreviations in knitting pattern:

also checkout youtube videos, search knitting, and you will come up with so many useful videos. on youtube search for mrs.moskowitz knit part I and II and possibly III she goes really slow as well for beginner its very helpful.
