How can an American girl fit in at a Spanish gathering?? ?
My boyfriend, who is from South America, speaks Spanish and English. I, however, only speak English. I have met several of his friends one-on-one and they have engaged in English conversation. But recently we were invited to a cookout and when all of his hometown friends are together, they all speak Spanish, including my boyfriend. Several times they translated for me, or apologized that they were speaking Spanish... I did talk to his friends that I already knew, but I found it difficult to engage with the new people because I felt left out of the overall conversation. I guess it is hard to come up with an ice breaker if you don't know what everyone around you has already been talking about. Anyway, we are invited to another party next week, and aside from taking a quick Spanish class, I don't know the best way to meet and socialize with this group. Any thoughts?
I also want to add that his friends, despite the language barrier are great... really friendly and kind.
Unfortunately, there are no quick fixes. Just try and be yourself, that is the best you can do. Now, in the long run if you feel like this guy is special to you then take advantage of the learning possibilities. Try and learn Spanish so that in future gatherings you will be able to communicate and impress his friends and relatives. Good Luck.
