Circular Knitting Needles Kit

How do you knit squares that start in the center of the square?
I found a "kit" in a previous Knit It! publication that has been discontinued. It's called "Multi-square Knitted Afghan Kit" (item number QBD102350). It looks pretty easy to do without the kit, IF I KNEW HOW to make the squares. The kit includes circular needles...If anyone knows how to do this--or has the actual pattern--I'd be deeply indebted! Thanks!!!
Cast on 4 sts.
*Knit 1, slip 1, knit 1, slip 1, turn at end of row* repeat once.
*YO, knit 1, YO, slip 1, YO, knit 1, YO, slip 1, turn at end of row* and it gets worse from there.
It is possible to knit from the center out with just two needles (as the ends of a circular), increasing 8 stitches (2 at each corner) every other round, knitting YO's and the stitches that look like knit and slipping the stitches that look like purls. I don't recommend the hassle unless you just want to prove to yourself that you can do.
It is much, much easier to just use 5 double-pointed needles to begin and then, when the needles have filled, continue on the circular needle. Whatever, you'll be increasing two stitches at each corner every other round.
