Circular Knitting Joining Yarn

How to change colors when knitting?
I'm working on a scarf on a circular needle. I'm going to have love heart on them and they are going to be a different color. the only thing is, when I'm changing colors, i do not want to cut off my yarn, i would just like my first color to be 'inside' my scarf when I'm knitting my love heart on. I've read a knitting book once and they said i should cut the yarn off if it's going to be 'inside' the scarf for more than 5 stitches. but I've also read another book that taught me how to 'join' the color I'm not using behind the stitches. does anyone know how do i do this? i can't seem to find any information on the internet and i can't find that book either.
Thanks.
When you are going to change he color, knit the new color but make sure you have the 1st color go to the back of the new color. Since you do not want to cut the yarn carry your 1st color across the heart and change the color the same way. You will have double thickness for the yarn as you will not be cutting yarn. If you need and further help e-mail me.
