Like everyone else in the world, I had been doing some secret knitting for Christmas. Well, not so completely secret. I did blog about it once. It’s the Encantada Wrap from Alchemy. I used Alchemy Haiku for this. What a lovely yarn. I hope I will be able to knit with it again someday. It’s rather expensive but so worth it. It’s a blend of Silk and Mohair. I can’t remember what colorway I used, though.
I finished it and gave it to my mom for Christmas. “Did she like it?” You ask? I’ll let the picture tell you the answer to that question:

yeah. I think she liked it
.
Gotta love the reaction shots.

Another Christmas present done! Yay!
Pattern: The Rib and Cable Gaiter on page 37 of the book One Skein.
Yarn: Some that I had in my stash. It’s some leftover Cascade Eco Wool. A fraction of a hank.
Needles: Size 6 16″ circular bamboo by Clover.
Started: November 20 something.
Finished: December 9
First of all, I have to say that Cascade Eco Wool kicks ass. I mean, that is some serious yardage right there. I bought the hank a couple of years ago to make a scarf for my husband’s grandfather. So I made a whole scarf + this gaiter out of it. AND I think I will have enough of this left over to make my dad some matching Convertable Mittens. And I think I only paid, like, $13.00 for the one hank. Not a bad deal.
So after I am done with the mittens (which I started today) I will be done with my Christmas knitting. I am kind of proud of myself this year. I escaped the out-of-control consumerism that is Christmas. All of my gifts to everyone this year are handmade. Whether they will like them is a whole other story.

Done and done. It curls in like a sonofabitch. I was tempted to frog and reknit in a pattern that would not curl, but I’m forcing myself not to.
Pattern: Simplest of all mobius scarves from 1st Treasury of Magical Knitting by Cat Bordhi.
Yarn: Noro Silk Garden. A tiny bit over one ball.
Needles: Denise size 8. I connected two cables together to get a 40″ cable.
Started: November 6th 2006.
Finished: November 11th, 2006.
I don’t recommend using the Denise Needles for this. I would go out and buy a long 47″ Addi Turbo circular needle if I were to do it all over again. I had a difficult time with the stitches flowing over the cable. I was constantly fighting them and pushing them to the other side.
I think I would also like a pattern that would not cause it to curl so much. My friend at work knit three rows and purled three rows so that It ended up in a kind of horizontal ribbing pattern. I think I would have liked that better. But this works for me. I like that I can wrap it around my head, if need be.
I have enough yarn to make myself a pair of flip top mittens to match. Yay! Stay turned!

I thought I should post a progress shot of my mobius scarf since this baby’s going to be done this weekend.
yes, I loves me a quick knit. And it is taking not as much yarn as I thought it would. I’ve only used one ball of Silk Garden on this. I had to break the band on a second ball, but I don’t think I will need to use very much of it. I have about an inch to go before it’s the width I want it to be.
It’s hard to tell if I am doing this right. I am wary. I am having a hard time wrapping my mind around this thing. How does it work? Will it grow longer when I bind off? It’s a strange knit. It’s a nice break from the lace scarf that I’m knitting because I am just knitting and knitting and knitting and I don’t have to worry about row counting. Yet it’s engaging and weird enough to keep my mind occupied.
Perhaps I will have enough yarn left over to make some matching mittens!

One of my collegues at work has a theory relating to Spokane Natives (don’t worry. This will relate to knitting.) She calls it the Spokane Vortex. You see, most of us Spokane Natives escape move away after we graduate from High School. But, no matter what, the Spokane Vortex will always draw us back. It has happened to most of the Natives that I know that are my age. Maybe I will write more about it another time, after I have pondered it more.
Anyway, all of that to say that the Noro Vortex has drawn me back! Yes, I have dug out these three skeins of Noro Silk Garden from the bottom of my stash box and decided to cast on in honor of Norovember. I didn’t think I was going to do this until one of my co-workers showed me the mobius scarf she made from Cat Bordhi’s book, “A treasury of magical knitting.” While she was in the process of knitting it I wasn’t sure if I wanted to try it right away. But when she brought in the finished product I knew I had to make one. And it needed to be in Noro. And, it just so happens, I have had this Silk Garden gathering dust in my stash for three years. So you see, I don’t even have to buy more yarn! Yay! Not that there’s anything wrong with buying yarn. Goodness me. It’s just that I’m kind of broke at the moment so buying more yarn would be bad for me right now.
I decided to hold off on showing you my thing that I showed you last week since it’s a gift for someone. I promise I will show it to you sometime though (Could I sound more vauge? geesh!). ahem.
Okay that is the knitting content for now. Happy Monday!
