Earl is dead

Earl in drawerIsn’t that a Dixie Chicks song? Hmm. Well, I wanted to get Earl done this weekend and was nearly there. I was seaming it up, and not liking it the closer and closer I got to being finished. As I was sewing the handle on I just realized that this was not meant to be. This is not the right yarn for this project. The bag would have ended up too flippy-floppy and I don’t like that at all. I began unraveling it and ran into all sorts of trouble. Recycled silk doesn’t like being unraveled. So, in a fit of frustration, I shoved it in the stash drawer. Ironically, it is sitting next to another yarn that I used for a bag gone bust, Bertie. Maybe I just should not knit bags. Anyway, I will put this away for awhile. I’m done with it.

lucky clover frontIn the meantime, I finished the right-front of Lucky Clover. Here’s a pic of it blocking. I haven’t casted on yet for the left front but will soon. I don’t know if I am going to spend a whole lot of time knitting it, though, because I have to get some baby things knitted up for my SIL’s baby shower in May. It’s exactly a month away and I am pretty behind.

BBBBI got kind of alot done on BBBB over the weekend. So that’s good. I also want to get some more of this Encore in a pink (I just found out she is having a girl :) ) and knit this baby pullover from CTH II. Isn’t that baby soooo adorable? I think I will also knit some matching booties.

Okay, that’s all I’ve got for now. Hope you are all having a nice weekend! I, on the other hand have to work today (reference desk duties). I only get a one-day weekend. Bummer.

Happy St. Paddy’s Day

©2004Wow, has it already been almost a week since I posted? This month is going by faaast. Here is my progress on the back of the Lucky Clover Wrap. As you can see, I messed up a couple of the clovers on the bottom. As I moved up toward the top I got the hang of it and was more careful to line everything up. I have just started the arm decreases. I’m hoping I will be done with the back this weekend. Then the largest part of the sweater will be over and done with. Not getting sick of it yet, though. Lace is fun because you don’t really get bored. At least not so far :) .

©2004And here is the side/bottom panel of Earl. As I mentioned in my last post I frogged everything and started over because the large side panels were too wide. This time I am combining the two hanks because there is quite a bit of color variation between the two. I’m knitting two rows of one hank and two rows of another. The colors are much more blended together now.

©2004In other knitting news, I finally got my first issue of Interweave Knits yesterday! I was stoked. There are some cute projects in there…I really like the lacy shrug, A Good Bias, they call that little number.

I ordered a Jordana Paige knitter’s purse in black the other day. It’s my birthday gift to myself. I always like to buy myself something I really want for my b-day. I am getting back a good amount of cash from the IRS so what the hell. I was tempted to buy yarn for Butterfly but decided against. I think that I am in full Summer Knitting mode right now. I will wait and knit Butterfly next fall, if I still feel like knitting it then. Actually, what I really need to do is get my ass going on the baby things for my SIL. Her baby shower is in May so I’d best be getting that done.

Thank you all so much for you kind birthday wishes. I am feeling much better now :) . Like I said, chocolate has medicinal properties.

how to feel better

©2004Alright…Yesterday was my birthday. I took the day off so that I could spend the day with my husband. When I woke up I was feeling a little bit depressed about turning 36. As the morning progressed, I started getting really depressed. So what does a girl do when she is depressed about getting older? She eats fudge. Not just any fudge. Fudge made at a chocolate shop on Cannery Row in Monterey. That’s right. The hubby and I jumped in the car and drove down the coast to Cannery Row. And, boy, was our mission accomplished, and then some. We got regular, old fashioned plain fudge, we got peanut butter fudge, and we got some caramel fudge. And we’re talking big ‘ole hunks of it that we’ll be feeding on for a week. God damn if it didn’t uplift my mood 100 percent! We walked around Cannery Row for a bit and soaked in the sun. The weather here the past couple of days has been awesome. It was actually kind of hot yesterday.

©2004In knitting news, I am plugging along on the Lucky Clover wrap. It’s taking some time to knit but it’s fun. I don’t have pics because I’m too lazy. Today I’ve been working on Earl. I blocked the two side pieces yesterday and finished the bottom panel this morning. Unfortunately, I realized that the side panels are waaaay to wide. So I spent some time futzing with measurements and then ripped and re-knit the side panels. Really, quite an annoying job, but worth it in the end.

Well, I gotta jet. There’s fudge to be eaten. Hope you are all having a great weekend.

Sundby and Earl

©2004I’ve been diligently working on Sundby this weekend. I want to make a significant dent in her progress during this rainy three-day weekend. The front looks exactly like the back, so just for the sake of interest, I’ve photographed it with the picture of the sweater in the book. Enjoy. I started on the sleeve this morning while watching “I Robot”. For some reason, I’ve fallen asleep durning the movie twice and my husband was very adamant that it was a really good movie. He’s been talking about it all week. So I decided that I need to watch this in the morning when I’m nice and alert. I started it from the begining and watched the whole thing. And you know what? He was right! It’s a really, really good movie. I kind of want to read the Asimov book now. Incidentally, I am infamous for falling asleep during movies, and action movies at that. I actually slept through Die Hard 2 IN THE THEATER.. I have no idea how that happend. I guess when I’m tired I sleep - and it doesn’t matter where I’m at.

©2004As said, I am diligently trying to get Sundby done, and the reason is that I have joined my second KAL. It’s hosted by my girl, Lolly and it’s called:
The Lucky Clover Knitalong

I can’t believe how quickly I got my yarn for it. I ordered it from an e-bay seller named Janette, of Janette’s Rare Yarns (the same person Lolly bought her yarn from). I ordered Monday and I recieved it Thursday! It came from England. Now that is fast service. I realized when I ordered it that she was the same seller that sold me my Kochoran, and I had the same experience - FAST shipment. I was expecting it to take more than a month. So, needless, to say, I’m stoked. Anyhoo, the KAL starts on March 1st so I want to wrap up Sundby before then so I can start on the Lucky Clover Wrap.

©2004Finally, after test-driving several bag patterns, I decided to use the pattern “Earl” from the Noro Knits book. I love that bag and wanted to knit it, anyway. I think the recycled yarn will work well for it, assuming I have enough of it.

Well, that’s about it for now. It looks like the sun is peeking through the clouds so I think I’m going to go for a hike in the Redwood Forest today. Have a wonderful weekend :) .

Opera Length Fingerless Gloves

©M.Smith As promised, here are my opera length fingerless gloves.
Pattern: Mikado Ribbon Fingerless Gloves. from the Pattern-a-day Knitting calendar.
Yarn: Peruvian Collection Pure Alpaca from Elann.com. 3 balls.
Needles: size 6 - Denise interchangeables.
Completed: 2/12/05
Here is a close-up pic of my hands. I like these. I like em alot. Don’t know when I will wear them since alpaca in California is a bit much, but who knows.

©M.SmithI was anxious to play with my new yarn! In fact, I woke up early thinking about it so, rather than lie in bed thinking, I got up (waaay too early for a weekend) and started knitting my recycled silk. I am going to use it for the bag called Tovesta in CTH II. I don’t think I would enjoy wearing this as a garment. I am only about 8 rows in and I can see that it’s going to be heavy. Its also kind of scratchy. But it will certainly make a very colorful bag.

Oh, I got my hemp yarn. My wonderful husband came up with me and kept me company. We made it up and back in less than an hour and a half. I still can’t believe they were able to track the bag down. Thank goodness they did! It’s not like I got a huge amount of the yarn, but still. I *hate* the idea of wasting money. So it’s all good.

Okay, I’ve been tagged for the music thing by my next door neighboor in the Bay Area Knitbloggers ring, Kackie C of Here Knitty, Knitty!. I thought it was such a nice gesture of her to learn more about her neighboor :) So here it goes…

1) Total amount of music files on your computer: 1230 songs (according to iTunes)

2) The last CD you bought was: The last CD I bought was a loooong time ago. I download all of my music these days. I bought Staind’s Break the Cycle for my husband as a gift. The last CD I got was exactly a year ago and it was White Stripes Elephant - a valentine from my husband.

3) What is the song you last listened to before reading this message? Radiohead’s “Everything in it’s right place”. I effing love that song. At the moment I am listening to F*ck Authority by Pennywise.

4) What are your five favorite songs and why they mean the most to you: Oh God. This might be difficult. My fave songs kind of change regularly. But I think the following would definately be on my top five no matter what:

  1. Baba O’Rielly by the Who. It’s just a great, great song. I think the thing that really got me was reading the liner notes to this song on their album my generation- the very best of. Pete Townsend is quoted, “This was a number I wrote while I was doing these experiments with tapes on the synthesizer. Among my plans was to take a person out of the audience and feed information - height, weight, autobiographical details - about the person into the synthesizer. The synthesizer would then select notes from the pattern of that person. It would be like translating a person into music. On this particular track I programmed details about the life of Meher Baba and that provided the backing for that number.” Dude! That is just fucking cool, don’t you think?!?
  2. Major Tom by David Bowie. I like story songs and this is the ultimate story song.
  3. You shook me all night long by AC/DC. I have an older brother that liked AC/DC. This song reminds me of my big brother. I also sort of rediscoverd this song in my early twenties, so it reminds me of being young and having fun with my friends. Plus it just rocks. I want to get an electric guitar and learn how to play the opening riff.
  4. Green Day’s Boulevard of Broken dreams is one of my current faves. I think it’s one of thier best songs. It kind of reflects how I have been feeling lately.
  5. Willie Nelson’s Whiskey River. I don’t know if this is one of my all time faves, but it’s definately up there. My mom bought “Willie and Family Live” When I was a kid and I loved it. My younger brother and I would dance around the house to it all the time. Whiskey River is one of my favorite songs from that album

5) What 3 people are you going to pass this baton to and why?
I’m going to pass the baton to:
1. Heather (Pixiestitz)
2. Eilene (Ei Knit)
3. Katherine (knitpowers)

Have you guys gotten this one yet? If so, just ignore…I am passing it on to these bloggers just because.
