over the weekend

1-22-philadelphia-pavementI’m going to make this a quick post because I am not feeling well. I have a stomach ache. So here is another quilt square. This one is called “Philadelphia Pavement” and is Block 3 of the Tuscan Sun quilt kit. It’s a bit more even than the last one. Again, I hand pieced this together. I really enjoy the process. It really forces me to slow down. This thing will definately take me a long time to make and it’s going to teach me patience in the process.

I found out last week that the setting kit is no longer available. So I will have to figure out how to put a border around the pieces after they are sewn together. But I’ll figure it out.

I finished knitting the sleeve of Loll (which I don’t have a picture of) but before starting on the other one I wanted to knit up a couple more squares of the LTKA. So here they are:
Square 10 Diagonal Chain
square 10 - Diagonal Chain
and
Square 11 - Miniature Mosaic
Square 11 - Minature Mosaic.

Yes, I am aware that there are major screw-ups in both squares. I just don’t feel like being a perfectionist right now so they will stay.

Happy Monday!

The dark side

What am I getting myself into?Oh my. Why, look what ended up in my basket while I was at JoAnn’s today. It’s a kit for a quilt square. Hmm. I wonder how I ended up with that?

But seriously… I have been thinking a lot about quilting lately. It kind of creeped in there slowly. A few months ago I really never had any desire whatsoever to quilt. But little seedlings have been planted the past few months that have taken root. First, there has been Nancy. She has been showing us her quilts for awhile. And, of course, they are gorgeous. Dianne also does incredible work. I have been admiring these women but never thought I would want to follow down this path. And then Heidi has been posting the squares for her Dear Jane quilt. I got curious one day and, being a librarian, searched the internet for Dear Jane quilts. Oh. My. God. Look at that gorgeous quilt! So I started checking out books from the library. Just to look. I checked out a Kaffe Fasset book. I checked out a begining quilting book. Just to look. All the while I have this schizo voice in my head telling me, “No! Don’t do it! it’s too much work. you don’t want to start ANOTHER money eating craft do you?!?” But still I keep looking. Then Amanda posted pictures of her quilt. Amazingly gorgeous! I don’t know how she gave it up when she finished it :) . So all of this adds up to that little kit you see there in the picture. I think this is a good way to start. We will see how I like it.

So, if I were to quilt I would like to handquilt. I love the old-fashionedness of it. My great grandmother handquilted and her workmanship was phenominal. In my family we still use the quilts she hand made to this very day. Maybe I want to do this to honor her memory. I don’t know. But quilting is calling me.

Here is something that I finished over the weekend:

LTKA #9 Horizontal Chain

LTKA #8 Rose Fabric

Two more squares of my Learn to Knit Afghan. Speaking of which, I created a little page dedicated to it. Each time I finish a square I will place it in it’s appropriate place on the table. This will help me keep track of what I have done. My goal is to get this done in 2007. I don’t think I will be able to stand working on it exclusively until it is finished. But I will try to knock out a few squares here and there in between projects.

Oh, and look who came out of the closet:

Loll Sleeve

It’s Loll! I’m working on the first sleeve’s fringe.

One more thing, I updated my “About” page with my knitting story if you are extremely bored and wish to learn about how I came to become a knitter.

Happy Monday!

Hello

Hi. How are you? I’m fine. I am thinking about re-posting my knitting stuff over here at Blacksheep. While I’m ruminating I thought I’d post some pictures of two more LTKA (learn to knit afghan) squares that I finished over the last couple of days.

Square 6. Twisted and Crossed Ribbing:

Square 7. Garter and Rib:

LTKA square 7 no flash

That’s it for now. Happy new year!

Full disclosure

Okay, it’s time for me to fess up…Basically, that “appointment” that I was telling you about was a job interview at the Spokane Public Library, for a Youth Services Librarian position. As it turns out, I got the job! Yay! I will be moving to back to Spokane by August 16th which is my first day on the new job. I’ve got a lot of work to do :) .

I’m so excited to work in this field of Librarianship, as well. I’ve been working in Academe for about six years, one of those years as a Science Librarian. And it’s been great. Wonderful experience and the people I have worked with here have been so good to me. It will be sad to leave them. But when I first decided to go to library school my intention, upon graduation, was to be a children’s librarian. So I feel like I will be where I am supposed to be, you know?

Sorry to build this up so much! I mean, it’s not like I’m the first person in the world to get a new job  . But I just didn’t want to make it public until I told my boss, which I did today. whew!

recycled silk afghan I have an FO to show you. It’s my recycled silk afghan. Here she is lounging on my chair. I’m glad it’s done. I did have a MAJOR bonehead moment last night, though. grrrr. I was so stoked because I had finished the mind-numbing task of attatching the fringe and I was in the process of weaving in my loose ends. I did something really stoopid. when I trimmed my “end” after weaving it in, I had accidentally cut a stich. ARG! I was so mad at myself! I’m not having very good luck lately with finishing my knits, am I? Don’t ask my how I fixed it. It was hella janky and I’m embarrassed to say (I thing I just tied the two loose ends together into a knot). I pray it doesn’t come loose someday, but it probably will. sigh.

vintage camiHere is my progress on the Vintage Cami. It seems like it takes forever to knit a round of this, but the good news is that there will be no seaming, which is great. I am going to focus on fininishing this over the weekend and then I will start my step mom’s Leonora. Then I will finish Lucky Clover.

Oh, I finally got my IK in the mail on Tuesday! I really like a lot of the patterns in this issue. I’m already trolling around for Rowan Kid Classic for the Greek Pullover :) . But I keep stopping myself. I mean, I’m moving to another state, for crissakes. I do not need to add to the yarn stash. It’ll be there when I get around to it. I also really like Chenille Cutaway Jacket, the Union Sqare Pullover, the Drop Stitch Cardigan (I’d do it in a solid color), and the Blissful Jacket. I wish I could knit faster :)

One down…

Lucky Clover SleeveFinally! I finished a sleeve! The end is in sight! well, I should wait and say that when I’ve finished the other sleeve. Becuase after that I still have to knit a long-ass wrappy band. When I get to that then I know I will be almost done. It does feel good to have the sleeve done, though.

silk afghanIn the meantime, I knitted a bit on my afghan today. Here’s a pic of it. I think this is almost done, too. I cut the fringe for it today and tried to apply it to one end, but soon realized that my crochet hook is way too small. I think I like this afghan. The colors, I mean. At first I wasn’t sure if it was hideous or pretty. At the moment I think it’s pretty. I’m not extremelly fond of knitting with this recycled silk. It has an awful musty smell that needs to go away. I put a Trader Joes Lavender dryer packet thingy in with my yarn, so hopefully that will help take the musty scent away. Another thing I dislike about this yarn is the debris that is tangled in with it. I’ve found all kinds of things spun up with it. Metals, woody material, and today I think I might have found a fingernail. Seriously. It might be my paranoid mind playing tricks on me, but it kind of looked like a fingernail. yuck.

vintage camiOh, and I got a good start on the vintage cami this weekend, too! this will be a good “at work” project. It’s knitted in the round so it seems like endless stockinette, which is perfect for reading e-mail and blogs and whatnot.

Better jet. gotta go make dinner. Tortilla soup! yum!
