The dark side
January 8th, 2007
Oh my. Why, look what ended up in my basket while I was at JoAnn’s today. It’s a kit for a quilt square. Hmm. I wonder how I ended up with that?
But seriously… I have been thinking a lot about quilting lately. It kind of creeped in there slowly. A few months ago I really never had any desire whatsoever to quilt. But little seedlings have been planted the past few months that have taken root. First, there has been Nancy. She has been showing us her quilts for awhile. And, of course, they are gorgeous. Dianne also does incredible work. I have been admiring these women but never thought I would want to follow down this path. And then Heidi has been posting the squares for her Dear Jane quilt. I got curious one day and, being a librarian, searched the internet for Dear Jane quilts. Oh. My. God. Look at that gorgeous quilt! So I started checking out books from the library. Just to look. I checked out a Kaffe Fasset book. I checked out a begining quilting book. Just to look. All the while I have this schizo voice in my head telling me, “No! Don’t do it! it’s too much work. you don’t want to start ANOTHER money eating craft do you?!?” But still I keep looking. Then Amanda posted pictures of her quilt. Amazingly gorgeous! I don’t know how she gave it up when she finished it
. So all of this adds up to that little kit you see there in the picture. I think this is a good way to start. We will see how I like it.
So, if I were to quilt I would like to handquilt. I love the old-fashionedness of it. My great grandmother handquilted and her workmanship was phenominal. In my family we still use the quilts she hand made to this very day. Maybe I want to do this to honor her memory. I don’t know. But quilting is calling me.
Here is something that I finished over the weekend:
Two more squares of my Learn to Knit Afghan. Speaking of which, I created a little page dedicated to it. Each time I finish a square I will place it in it’s appropriate place on the table. This will help me keep track of what I have done. My goal is to get this done in 2007. I don’t think I will be able to stand working on it exclusively until it is finished. But I will try to knock out a few squares here and there in between projects.
Oh, and look who came out of the closet:
It’s Loll! I’m working on the first sleeve’s fringe.
One more thing, I updated my “About” page with my knitting story if you are extremely bored and wish to learn about how I came to become a knitter.
Happy Monday!

Ooh. Ambitious! I’ve made a quilt before. Now I wish I could go back and do some of the finishing work over, but it was still a lot of fun. I think it’s really neat that you’re thinking of continuing in a craft that your grandmother did.

Wow, I’ve been feeling the same way - I would LOVE to learn to quilt (specifically hand quilt) but I’ve been beyond intimidated! I can’t wait to see more of your progress - congratulations
