Treading Water

8 29 wips What you see in the picture is the extent of my wips. Notice how the lace kerchief scarf looks smaller? yeah, I frogged it and started over mid-week. As I said in my last post, I messed up the increases. I thought I would be able to compensate by just keeping on with them until the piece measured 41″, but the width was starting to bug me. It was getting too wide. So I frogged it and started over, with needles one size larger. I think it will drape better, knitting it in a larger needles size. I have to say, tho, I am getting kinda sick of this knit. It was supposed to be a quickie and, look, I’ve been knitting on it for two weeks now! You will also see the neckband for the Lucky Clover wrap. This has been mind-numbingly boring to knit, but every once in awhile I will get the urge to just get this f*cking thing done and knit on it while I’m on a car drive or watching a moving. One of these days it will be done and all of a sudden I will have my Lucky Clover Wrap and I will be sooooo stoked. I saw a sweater in Nordstrom the other day with this very clover lace pattern, so I’ll actually be styling.

8 29 opalYou will also see in the picture that I started a sock. The yarn is the Opal yarn I bought a couple of weeks ago. I was dying to start knitting it up so I could see how the pattern would work. Well. This little f*cker has been the bane of my existence the past week. I have frogged and restarted this stupid thing three times! And I still have a messed up pattern (see picture). So I am going to just put this thing down and return when I am done with a few other things. It’s irritating me too much.

8 29 apricotSo, I bought some yarn yesterday…I’m on a pink and green kick lately (blame it on the Artyarns). I mentioned that I bought some cute pink-pinstriped pants at Bannana Republic, I also bought an adorable light pink top from there Saturday to go with them. So I’ve been thinking about pink and green with regard to upcoming knits. My mom and I stopped by JoAnn’s fabrics yesterday and they had a smiggen of Cotton Ease left. This green was pretty much all that was left in any quantity. So I bought some for the Apricot Jacke in last summer’s issue of Rebecca. I think I will start on this next. (I WILL finish Lucky Clover first, tho, dammit).

8 29 05I also found this pretty yarn and thought it would be lovely for a lightweight scarf. So I bought a couple balls and thought I’d try it with the spiral scarf in Loop-de-Loop. Well see how that works.

That’s all from this little corner of knitblog land. Hope you all have a wonderful week!

new life = f-ing busy!

Holy crap. My new job is busy! Note that this is the first chance I have been able to post since my first day on Tuesday! Maybe it’s because it was my first week, and I’m learning a lot? I don’t know. I DO know that I have lots of homework. Since I am a brand, spanking new children’s librarian I’m going to have to do lots of YA reading in my spare time. So that means less time for knitting, since I really can’t knit and read at the same time. I am going to have to figure out a schedule for myself or something because in my spare time I am automatically drawn to knitting. So I will have to plan an hour or so a day to YA reading. Also, I won’t be able to blog at work, as I don’t really have my own computer. Since I am working at two different branches and, for that matter, at different places within the library, we log into a server instead and save our work to it. It’s actually a good idea so that we don’t leave our work at different computers. It’s all accessable via the server.

more on my job in a minute. Let’s talk about knitting instead.

8 21 05 lacy kerchiefSo this is my progess on the Lacy Kerchief Scarf. I thought I was halfway done with it, since I have finished the required number of yarn over repeats (to give it width), but my measurements don’t match the instructions. It’s supposed to be 41 inches long and it’s only about 28 or something. So I think at this point I will continue with the YO repeats until it measures 41″.

I like it! The pattern is very easy. I had to rip once, and it wasn’t so bad. I was able to easily figure out where I was without a lifeline. I am liking the color combo more, too. I’ve noticed on my little shopping expeditions (Did I tell you I work across the street from Nordstrom and the Riverpark Square shopping mall? Dangerous.) I have noticed that Pink and Green are kind of in right now. Since I didn’t really have any clothes to match these colors I bought some pink and grey pinstripe pants from Bananaa republic. I may have to find a cute pink or green (or both) shirt to go with them…Like I said. Dangerous.

8 21 yarnDid I show you some of the sock yarn I bought recently? The Claudia’s Hand Dyed I bought at my last trip to Commuknity when I went to a lovely little open house with my knit buddy Kathryn. The Opal I bought a week ago when I was with my mom. I discovered another yarn Store in Spokane! It’s actually a quilting store that also has a yarn room. They have a good selection of Noro and they have Addi Turbos which I’m happy about. I bought this Opal yarn because I’ve been very curious about it and I can’t leave a yarn store without buying something. And sock yarn is the fallback.

My mom and I earlier that morning, had been talking to someone about getting help starting a yarn store here in town. So we stopped by there to see what the competition was like. We are kind of just thinking about it at this point, but I will let you know of any developments if any thing comes of it.

So, as for my job…I really like it! I am definately a public librarian by nature. It feels really good to help people in this realm. it feels natural. And I am really, really going to love helping kids. I’ve already kind of been helping them the best I can when they ask me questions and I love it. I’m a little terrified of Storytime since I’ve never really done it and don’t have a clue. But I think I just need to get through my first one and I will be okay. The job itself is very busy. There was a severe budget cut so everyone is doing the jobs of two people, really. But I’m fine with it. I actually like it. It makes the day go by faster. And it’s stuff that is fun to do. I do feel a little overwhelmed by everything I learned this week, but that’s to be expected with new jobs.

So my blog updating might not be as frequent as it was before, probably only be able to really do it on the weekends. And I also will have less time for blog reading, as well. I’m trying to keep up in the evenings, though. If I don’t comment on your blog right away, just know I am still reading you :) . Have a great week!

First FO in Spokane

ChickamiFinished my tank yesterday morning. It’s amazing how much knitting one can accomplish when one just sits down for a few hours and does it!
Pattern: Chickami tank by Bonne Marie Burns.
Yarn: Cotton Ease in Black. how many balls did I use? hmmm. I think around 2.5.
Needles: Denise Interchangeables, size 6, then switched to size 6 Addi Turbos when I bought them. It was much easier to knit with the Addi Turbos.
Started: July 25th, 2005
Finished: August 13th, 2005

We took these pictures up at Mt. Spokane on a beautiful hike. When I lived here as a child and teenager, I didn’t go hiking like I do now. Man. I had no idea Spokane was so beautiful! I’m stoked. I feel better knowing that I have good hiking spots to go to.

As for the Tank. I like it. It fits loosely, but that’s fine. I had a feeling it would since I’m using a larger gauge yarn than the pattern calls for. I was planning on knitting the wider strapped version but by the time I got to the ribbing it was too late. I’m kind of bummed about that because my bra strap is in clear view, but oh well.

8 14 lacy kerchief scarfI started the Lacy Kerchief Scarf from Summer 2005 IK yesterday after finishing the tank. I’m kind of obsessed with this pattern! I really am enjoying this knit so far. I like the way the pink and green artyarns looks with it, too. These are not colors I normally wear, but I really like it, regardless.

Things here are coninuing to come together. I have most of the boxes unpacked and a few pictures on the wall. I start my job on Tuesday, and am a little bit nervous about that. But I have a feeling it will be wonderful.

Take care and have a great Monday!

wanted to show you

My friends over at Daffodil Lane sent me a link to this fascinating article at CNN.com, an interview with Mena Trott, co-founder of Six Apart (of Movabletype fame.). This quote caught my attention:

Knitting blogs are a huge phenomenon. I find it fascinating because knitting and sewing are things that have historically drawn women — and now men, too — together in groups to talk about their families, talk about their lives, talk about society. And they would use sewing and knitting and quilting as this way of getting together. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that knitting is one of the things that drives a lot of people to Web logging and to online communities.

I have to agree! I find the whole phenomenon of blogging really interesting, but knitblogging in particular. It does mirror the in-person knitting communities, I think. And, yet, it’s way bigger.

Just thought I’d point your attention to that. Things here are soooo busy. I’m slowly trying to catch up on my blog reading. Today was the first day I’ve been able to get any knitting done in forever. I am just about done with the Chickami Tank.

I went to the Downtown Spokane library today (where I will be working) to fill out paperwork. Wow! what a beautiful library! I think I will also enjoy working there. I will also be working at a branch library, Hillyard. I went to middle school and High School in Hillyard (as you know from my 100 things list :) ). So I’m looking forward to getting back to my roots.

Thanks for all of the well wishes, guys! I am so grateful to have my knitting sisters to kind of cheer me on :) .

Here

8 10 stashI made it! got here at around 1:00 pm on Sunday. My inlaws have been visiting here for a few days and we’ve been showing them around. My knitting stuff has been sitting like that for three days and I haven’t knitted a stitch! It’s been soooo friggen hot here. I can’t even think about knitting, to be honest. I’m going to miss foggy Santa Cruz where it stays 70 degrees (or so) all year round :( . I am having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that I don’t live there anymore. This is really nice, though. We have lots of space and we live near some really beautiful parks. I think it will be a good thing.
