Audrey Swatching Troubles

Well, I swatched for Audrey last night with not so good results. When I was finished my swatch measured 12 cm! Unfortunately, I’m new to the whole “square swatch” thing. I feel totally clueless. I’ve always just counted my stitches per inch and gone with that. So I guess this means that I have too few stitches and need to go down a size? I am so mentally challenged when it comes to things like this. I just spent an hour on the audrey-along site, reading about the gauge issues. A lot of people are using teh Denise needles to knit thier audreys. I wonder if I shouldn’t just buy those needles. What do you think? How are those Denises? would it be worth it for me to get those?

update

I just wanted to post a quick update on what I’m doing. I went to visit my family in Spokane, WA over the weekend and had a wonderful time. I actually have lots of knitting news to share.

My mom and I went to a yarn store in search of some yarn and needles and a book with instructions for left-handed knitters. We found one and I ended up buying some beautiful handspun, hand dyed yarn from New Mexico:

It is really, really pretty. I think I will make a scarf with it. I was going to have my mom make a scarf for a first project, too, but the lady in the store suggested that, instead, she make a dishcloth. I thought that was a great idea! Scarves kind of take forever. So she got some really nice cotton yarn that had different shades of pink in it.

The next day, on the three hour drive back from picking the guys up from backpacking, She learned how to knit. I tried to show her, but she’s left handed and I’m right handed. I had to read the left-handed instructions and then actually try to do them to show her but it was kind of akward for me. I think she just kind of figured it out. After awhile it just kind of came natural to her and she had half of her dishcloth done by the time she was home :) .

Over the weekend, I worked on, and finsished a little cozy for my iPod:

I also worked on my Widow’s shawl.

I will hopefully start audrey soon. Probably start her this weekend. I’ll put some pics up tonight. I was thinking, though, that I don’t have any pics of my mom’s beautiful dishcloth :( . I should have thought of taking one. oh well.

I also had a surprise for me in the mail today. Yarn! check it out:

karabella

I almost forgot that I ordered this. I got it at WEBS and it was hella cheap! 16 dollars a bag! Can you believe it? It’s a nice, lightweight cotton yarn. I think I will make a sweater with it. I have some ideas…..

Another quick post

I *love* my Rowan magazine. I think I’ve decided what my next project will be. It is going to be a bag that they have featured called “”Funky Chunky.” It’s a little backpack (or a “rucksack”, as those fancypants British call them). Here’s a picture of it that I hunted down:

It’s going to cost a fortune to make. But oh well. A good purse costs good money. I decided that, instead of using lots of reds and yellows, I am going to use colors that are in my wardrobe so that it will match with everything I own.

I also discovered another lys. It’s called Knitting Arts and it’s in Saratoga. And they have awesome hours. They are open until 8 pm most days of the week. I’m stoked because I can just drop in there on my way home from work.

Quickie update

I got Rowan 35 in the mail yesterday! Yay! My first knitting magazine. I’m already hooked.

There is so much in here that I want to do. I love the bags that they feature (I’m a bag freak). Of course, I love audrey, and I am going to knit her. But I also really like Alice and Flora, too. I may just have to knit Flora.

Well, I’m off to get through these socks for my husband. I’m on vacation until next tuesday. On Friday, I’m going up to Spokane, WA to visit my mom while my husband goes backpacking with my step-dad.

Miscellany and Widow’s Shawl, redux

I’m waiting for Rowan 35 to get here from the Knitting Garden so I can start Audrey. In the meantime, I’ve been working on the Widow’s shawl redux. I came to the same problem with this damn bell pattern. The pattern is really annoying. First of all, it’s 18 rows long. Second of all, you get to a point in the pattern when you have to Knit 4 together in the back of the stitch, and of course repeat this as the pattern dictates. It’s very difficult and frustrating to do. It slows things down way too much. So I’ve abandoned the bell pattern and am going back to the very basic pattern that I got from Spincraft
It’s extremelly easy. And with this yarn I need something easy. The yarn is hard to work with. It’s like knitting with hair, it’s so thin. Here is what I’ve done so far:

Widow's shawl redux

Those are my hubby’s hands holding it taught  . I love how we all get our men to get involved in our knitting lives in one way or another.

Speaking of that, I’m also knitting some wool socks for my guy. I am trying to race through them fast because he is hoping to wear them on his hiking trip next weekend. I started this one a couple of hours ago and seems to be going by fast, so I think I will be able to meet my deadline. Have a look:

Raffa's Socks

They are boring, I know. They are to serve a total utilitarian purpose, to keep his feet nice and cozy inside his hiking boots. I’m using the good ole’ stand-by: Brown sheep company’s Lamb’s Pride worsted. So I’ll be knitting these boring socks for the next few days. I’ll make him model them when I’m done
